Spybot Search & Destroy is one of the most popular anti malware tools out there. Throughout the years we have seen a dramatic rise of malware code and there is a definitive need of equipping every home PC with this kind of a solution.

From the user perspective Spybot is a very easy tool to use and therefore it is the perfect type of software for us to recommend to non tech-savvy users.

There are two steps before actually firing up Spybot's scanner - the first would be to update the signatures database. And the other is to immunize the favourite malware target - Internet Explorer. You will be happy to see that Spybot integrates its protection module in Microsoft's browser and therefore provides preventive measures from inside the browser.

After any database update you should use the "Immunize" icon on the menu to further secure your Internet Explorer browsing experience.

Computer Geek's Guide to Spyware.

What Is Spyware?

Spyware (also known as Adware or Malware) is a general term referring to software that is secretly installed on a user's computer and reports internet activity or personal information back to it's owners through the user's internet connection.

The intent of Spyware can be harmless. It may record a userís web activity and use that information by displaying targeted (but unwelcome) advertisements on the userís computer. Or it may be criminal. It may be used to steal passwords and other sensitive information such as credit card numbers.

The term Spyware now covers a wide range of software that perform very different functions. These functions can include:

  • Gathering information on a user's surfing habits

  • Displaying un-requested advertisements while surfing the Internet (Pop-up ads)

  • Gathering private information such as passwords, credit card details and email addresses (identity theft)

  • Displaying different pages on your web browser than those requested

  • Sending spam emails from your computer

  • Sending spam emails to your computer

  • Slowing down your Internet connection

  • Using your computer as a server to broadcast pornography

  • Connecting through an alternative network, charged at a higher rate

  • Allowing someone to remotely use your computer with or without your knowledge

Spyware is not a virus. A virus damages the computerís functioning and proliferates, while Spyware gathers information.

How do I get Spyware?

Spyware can come from many sources, the main places being websites of questionable integrity, file sharing networks, removable media and free software downloads.

A good example would be Kazza, where Spyware is bundled into the installer. In this case, the user is informed of the contents in the agreement, but many users simply click "I accept" without reading the full agreement.

How can I Prevent Spyware?

  • Don't click on pop-up adverts - close them using the task bar.

  • Only visit sites that you know are credible.

  • Always read the agreement when installing new software.

  • Keep your operating system up-to-date.

  • Use Real Time Spyware Protection software like Spyware Terminator

How do I Remove Spyware?

Unfortunately, there is no 'silver bullet' for Spyware as there are so many different types. There are also many software packages to remove spyware. Popular free programs that we recommend for removing Spyware include Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Terminator.

The following steps should remove the vast majority of Spyware from a Windows Computer:

  • Remove any programs that you do not need by accessing your control panel and using the "Add/Remove Programs" option.

  • Download the latest bug fixes and updates for Windows by clicking here.

  • Download Spybot Search and Destroy and install it. If you already have this program, make sure it is up-to-date by using the "Search for updates" option.

  • Disconnect from the Internet and run Spybot

  • Reboot your machine.

  • Run Spybot again.
